Closely related and very similar to the Cut-throat Finch. Also very easy to sex visually. Cocks have the entire head red, but its not as bright red as on the Cut-throat Finch. Hens do have some red on the crown as well. More evident in the fawn mutation due to the lighter body colour (cock left)

The cock is also much more brightly marked down the front with white feathers edged in black
