
Cocks are mostly red with a pinkish wash. Hens by comparison are peach-pink. The cock also has a black lower belly, vent and undetail, whereas the hens black markings are restricted to the undertail (cock left)

The cock also show more colour to the face than the hen (cock left)

In the nominate form the crown feathers are red with a brown base. In the subspecies kept in SA the crown is more brown with a pinkish wash (cock left)

The cock also has a reddish tone to the mantle and back which is absent in the hen (cock left)
